Backup Synology NAS to Rsync Server (part 1)

Howto backup Synology station to an rsync server on LAN?
Material:

  • Synology NAS with DSM version 4
  • Linux server (Ubuntu 11.10)

Install rsync on Ubuntu.

apt-get install rsync

Modify /etc/rsyncd.conf configuration file:

max connections = 300
log file = /var/log/rsync.log
timeout = 0
[mypaths]
comment = My backup
path = /mnt/mybackup
read only = no
list = yes
auth users = myusername
secrets file = /etc/rsyncd.scrt
strict modes = false

Modify /etc/rsyncd.scrt authentication file with username and password used to access your Linux server:

myusername:mypassword

Be sure rsync starts on startup. Open /etc/default/rsync and set:

RSYNC_ENABLE=true

Now you should configure Synology NAS.

Open Network Backup.
Click on Create and follow the wizard.
Select Network backup (rsync-compatible server).
Fill in destination tab:

  • Ip address of the rsync linux server
  • Username and password are the ones stored in /etc/rsync.scrt
  • Backup module: mypaths
  • Directory: the destination directory on /mnt/mybackup, e.g. photo_backup
  • Fill in the other options you need

Fill in the source tab.
If you need scheduling, fill in the schedule tab.
Finish the wizard.

Now your backup is planned, backup now or wait for the scheduled time.
